Option 1: Take Flight to Lumbini from Pokhara - Fast but Expensive
Route: (Pokahra - Siddharthanagar by flight) + (Siddharthanagar - Lumbini by drive)
Travel Time: 25 ~ 35 minutes + 40 minutes
Flying via a domestic airline is considered the most time-saving and comfortable way to travel from Pokhara to Lumbini. After the air travel, tourists still need extra transfer from the airport to Lumbini Park.
Step 1: Fly from Pokhara to Bhairahawa
The nearest airport serving Lumbini is the Gautam Buddha Airport (also known as Bhairahawa Airport, IATA: BWA) in Bhairahawa, Siddharthanagar municipality, Rupandehi, Nepal. Currently, there are two non-stop flights operating from Pokhara Airport to Bhairahawa Airport each day, with a quite short duration of only 20 minutes. Air ticket is about USD 60. Both flights depart from Pokhara in the morning. One is offered by Buddha Air and another is by Yeti Airlines.
Tips: Pokhara Airport is located about 7 KM, 25 minutes' driving from Phewa Lake.
Step 2: Transfer from Bhairahawa Airport to Lumbini
p> After landing at Bhairahawa Airport, you can easily find and take local taxis, public bus or private car to Lumbini Park. The bus needs about 1 hour while driving cost around 40 minutes. Option 2: Take Tourist Bus to Lumbini from Pokhara - Long & Bumpy
Route: Pokhara - Lumbini Park; Pokhara – Bhairahawa - Lumbini
Travel Time: about 7 ~ 8 hours
Driving from Pokhara directly to Lumbini is another popular and budget choice. There are many travel agencies in Pokhara can book bus tickets to Lumbini for you. Or you can buy ticket in person from the bus station in Pokhara. There are different kinds of buses with different prices you can choose from. To ensure a relatively comfortable experience, a tourist bus with a higher price (such as Green Line, Golden Travel Bus) and air conditioner is much more recommended than a local public bus or a cheap tourist bus. Meanwhile, a direct bus to Lumbini Park is more advised than getting transfer in Bhairahawa if you are not going to accommodation in Bhairahawa.
Most roads from Pokhara to Lumbini are not paved. Traveling through dusty villages and towns, tourist all think it a unforgettable and suffering experience, because you also need to drive on winding, uneven and narrow mountain roads for more than a half day. The bus will stop every one or two hours, so the passengers can get off, take a short break, get some supply and have a simple lunch. Usually, you leave Pokhara in the morning and arrive in Lumbini Park at dusk. When getting close to Lumbini, you will see many local men riding bikes with women and children on the back seat, local Nepalese women dressing saris and children playing at the roadside.
