How far is Chitwan from Kathmandu

Kathmandu is located in central Nepal while Chitwan is about 152 km to the southwest of it, near the border with India. Taking a flight is the fastest transfer way but you need to take a taxi after arriving at the airport. If you want to see the scenery on the way, taking a bus or travelling by private car is also available.

Kathmandu to Chitwan Transfer Options

Option 1: Kathmandu to Chitwan by Flight

Route: Kathmandu ✈ Bharatpur (20min) + Bharatpur to Chitwan by car (50min)

The air hub for Chitwan National Park is Bharatpur which is about 23 km, 50 minutes’ drive away. At present, there are 7 daily direct flights from Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) to Bharatpur Airport (BHR) operated by Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines. The flight only takes 20 minutes.

After arrival, you can find plenty of taxis at the airport that can take you to Chitwan National Park.

Option 2: By Bus - Kathmandu to Chitwan Bus (5.5-7.5h)

Travelling to Chiwan by bus is another popular choice for independent tourists. You can take daily buses at Sorakhutte near Thamel area in Kathmandu. After 5-7 hours, the bus will arrive at Sauraha, a little village about 7 km, 30 minutes’ drive from Chitwan National Park.

The bus is usually air-conditioned and will stop a couple of times for meal or toilet breaks. The road may be a little bumpy sometimes because there is always some part of Nepal is under construction. On the way you will see the hilly landscapes if you sit on the left side of the bus. After you get to Sauraha, you can take a taxi for another 30 minutes to Chitwan National Park.
