Bhaktapur, also called Bhadgaon or Khwopa (Newari name), is located in the eastern corner of Kathmandu Valley, about 14km away from Kathmandu. Together with Kathmandu and Patan, it is one of the three major cities in Kathmandu Valley as well as one of must-be-visited tourist destinations in Nepal. Devoid of the traffic and pollution makes Bhaktapur a more popular place for a comfortable walking. Though the 2015 earthquake caused terrible devastation in Nepal, but only a few temples in Bhaktapur were destroyed and many traditional buildings survived.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is one of the most outstanding architectural showpieces of Kathmandu Valley as it highlights the ancient arts of Nepal. In spite of several damages, it is well-preserved. The golden effigies of the kings perched on the top of stone monoliths, the guardian deities looking out from their sanctuaries, the wood carvings in every place- struts, lintels, uprights, tympanums, gateways and windows- all seem to form a well-orchestrated symphony.

Nyatapola Temple

Type: Architecture

Before reaching Taumadhi Square, you will see the towering rooftop of Nyatapola Temple with five floors. Nyatapola Temple is the largest Hindu Temple in Nepal, dedicated to the goddess Siddhilakshmi. Built in 1702 A.D under the rule of King Bhupatindra Malla, Nyatapola Temple is perfectly proportioned and the construction was so sturdy that the earthquakes only damaged the very tip of the building. While climbing the steps in the temple, you will see many statues on every step.

Taumadhi Square

Located in southwest of Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square is the second largest square in Bhaktapur. The Nyatpol Temple is its landmark. It was built in 1702 to worship the Goddess Lakshmi. The temple is the tallest pagoda in Nepal with 5 stories. It is a strong and firm, and remained well from the earthquakes in 1934 and 2015. The Bhairavnath Temple is another famous attraction in Taumadhi Square. It houses a gilded bust of the terrifying Bhairav.

55 Window Palace & Golden Gate

Type: Royal Palace

The Golden Gate is the entrance to 55-Window Palace, an ornate art of Repoussé metalwork. Step into Golden Gate, you will see the famous 55-Window Palace. Housed in Bhatakpur Durbar Square, the 55 window palace was under the riegn of King Yaksha Malla and remodeled by King Bhupatindra Malla. It is featured in gracious setting and sculptural with wood-carved windows, doors and houses. It is well-known as one of the oldest monument in Nepal at present.

Dattatreya Square

Dattatreya Square is surrounded by many red-brick buildings. It lays famous Hindu temples, such as Dattatreya Temple, Pujari Math, etc. Compare to othertwo square, Dattatreya Square is much more peaceful. And you can find many ancient relics there. Locals believe that Dattatreya Templ was constructed from a single tree. Several large sculptures and statues are placed at the entrance of temple. During the Mohani Festival, Dattatreya Temple celebrates this special day.

Potters' Square

Type: Square, Handicraft

Potters’ Square is not cherished square full of cultural sites, but if you are interested in the process of making ceramic spot, visit the square for a wander. The potters work with their wooden wheels to give various sizes and shape to the clay, then later it would be burned in a traditional oven, then moved and covered with ashes until it cooled down. There are also many interesting completed articles for sale, like clay pots, charms, incense holders etc. You can buy some as souvenirs.

How to Get to Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur is only 15km to Kathmandu and there are various transportation means for your choice.

Taking Public Bus: There are available buses transferring between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur in every 15~30 mintures, which takes about 1 hour. The last Bhatatpur-Kathmandu bus departs at 6:00pm. However, public buses not recommended to foreign tourists, because it will be very crowded, and some people even take seat on the bus roof.

Taking Taxi: For independent travelers, it is a good idea to rent a car or call a taxi to travel to or around Bhaktapur. Remember to take a bargain in advance, and it takes 600 Rupees. Best Time to Visit Bhaktapur

Located in Kathmandu Valley, the climate in Bhaktapur is warm and temperate. The summers here have a good deal of rainfall, while the winters have very little. The Köppen-Geiger climate classification is Cwa. In Bhaktapur, the average annual temperature is 17.9 °C. About 1583 mm of precipitation falls annually.

Most the attractions in Bhaktapur are cultural and historic, and their charm is not influenced by the changes of climate and weather. As a result, you can visit Bhaktapur all the year around. But if you want to extend your tour to Bhaktapur and Chitwan, Feburary ~ May and September ~ November are best time.

The ancient city of Bhaktapur opens to tourist in 24 hours, but the opening time of the ticket office lasts from 7:00 ~ 19:00. (The ticket fare of Bhaktapur is 750 Rupees, free for visit if you accommodate in Bhaktapur.)

2. What to Pack
