Best Time to Visit Paro: Paro Weather, Climate and Temperature

Paro is one of the most popular destinations in Bhutan because of its ancient history and pure beauty. It is usually the arrival city for tourists coming to this peaceful land because it has the only international airport in the country.

Located in a beautiful valley and with an elevation of 2,000 ~ 3,000 meters, Paro enjoys a mild, warm and temperate climate. It is not too hot in summer or too cold in winter. The average annual temperature is around 12℃ and the annual rainfall is about 1820mm. Best Time to Visit Paro

Paro is actually suitable to visit all year round, but the best time would be spring (March to May) when the peach flowers on the mountain, wildflowers in the valley and alpine azaleas are in bloom and autumn (September to November) when Paro is such a pleasant place to stay with comfortable sunshine, cool breeze and favorable weather.

What’s more, the most important festival on Paro - Paro Tshechu usually begins in early April and lasts 5 days. It is a good chance to blend into the local culture and have a good shot at seeing the King of Bhutan in person.

Paro Weather in Spring - March, April and May

Paro in spring begins to warm up and you can expect a little rain to ease the dry weather brought by winter. In March, the precipitation is 54 mm and the average temperature is 9.9 °C/49.8 °F with the highest goes up to 15.9°C/60.6°F and the lowest drops to 3.9°C/39°F. In April, the precipitation is 97 mm and the average temperature is 13.1 °C/55.6 °F with the highest being 18.8°C /65.8°F and the lowest being 7.4°C /45.3°F. In May, though it is still spring, Paro has shown some signs of summer. The rainfall surges to 174 mm and the average temperature is 13.1 °C/55.6 °F with the highest being 18.8°C /65.8°F and the lowest being 7.4°C /45.3°F.

What to Wear & Pack: Warm coat (in May can change to light coat) and sweater, long pants, comfortable shoes. Sunglasses and hat in March and April and light raincoat in May.

Summer is the rainy season of Paro, so there will be many rainy days and overall it is cool although the temperature goes up a little. In June, there is an obvious increase in rainfall, which reaches 346 mm. The average temperature is 17.3°C/67.1°F. Sometimes it will get to 21.4°C /70.5°F or 13.3°C/63.1°F. In July, the rainfall stays ample, which is 428 mm. The average temperature is 18.2°C /64.8°F. In August, it is still rainy and hot with a monthly rainfall of 331 mm and average temperature of 17.8°C /64°F.

What to Wear & Pack: T-shirt and a light coat in case it gets cold at night or on rainy days. Long pants and long skirts (Bhutan is a religious country, so clothes like short skirts are not recommended), comfortable shoes. Sunglasses and raincoat or umbrella.

Autumn is one of the best seasons to visit Paro when Paro valley is painted yellow by the nature. In September there is still much rainfall (250 mm) but also many sunny days. The average temperature is 16.9°C/62.4°F with the highest being 21°C/69.8°F and the lowest being 12.9°C /55.2°F. In October, there is clearly more sunshine with only 85 mm rainfall. The average temperature is comfortable 13.7°C/56.7°F but in November, it drops to 9.2°C/48.6°F and the minimal temperature is only 2.9°C/37.2°F.

What to Wear & Pack: Warm sweater and coat, especially in November. Long pants and long skirts, comfortable shoes. Light raincoat in September and sunglasses and hat in October and November. As the weather gets dry, you can pack some facial cream and hand cream.

Paro Weather in Winter - December, January and February

Paro in winter has clear days and low temperature. It can get really chilly on windy days. It rains little and snows sometimes in January or February. In December, the rainfall drops to only 4 mm. The average temperature is 6.2°C/43.2°F but the lowest temperature is only -0.2°C/31.6°F. January is the coldest month with a rainfall of 13 mm and an average temperature of 5°C/41°F. Weather in February is similar to January. The monthly precipitation is 23 mm and the average temperature is 6.5°C/43.7°F.

What to Wear & Pack: Sweater and down-coat is a must, fleece jacket, scarf and gloves, warm shoes, sunglasses, and don’t forget the facial cream and hand cream to protect your skin from the dry weather.

1. Book Your Bhutan Tour in Advance

With great altitudinal variations, Bhutan has a mixed climate and weather in various areas. So tourists should pack and dress properly and accordingly. Also Bhutan is a religious country full of monasteries, Dzongs (fortresses) and sacred religious sites, therefore, long pants and long sleeved tops should be worn to show respect while visiting those places. You can dress in layers, easy to put on and off. Warm clothes are needed for winter travel and high-altitude areas. As for trekking, a pair of comfortable and durable shoes is recommended.
